Trump plays down soldier injuries as a headache

Former President Donald Trump appeared to downplay the hundreds of injuries suffered by U.S. soldiers at the Ain al Asad air base in January 2020.

The attacks launched by Iranian proxies came in response to Trump’s killing of former Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani, but the former president questioned the severity of those violations during a news conference on Tuesday.

“First of all, hurt?” Trump responded to reporters when asked why he did not respond with force to Iran’s attack. “What does hurt mean? Injured does that mean because you had a headache? Because the bombs never hit the fortress.”

More than 30 US soldiers suffered traumatic brain injuries when Iran fired at least 10 ballistic missiles at Ain al Asad air base in Iraq. The United States had received advance warning that Iran could attack five U.S. military sites in response to the drone strike on Soleimani.

The personnel were able to seek shelter and no US soldiers were killed.

Questions about Trump’s handling of the situation were fueled by Iran’s firing of more than 100 ballistic missiles at targets in Israel, in retaliation for the Jewish state’s recent campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

Trump responded to the attacks on Tuesday by suggesting that the world was heading toward a third world war.

“You are on the verge of a global catastrophe,” Trump said in Wisconsin. “We have a nonexistent president and a nonexistent vice president who should be in charge, but no one knows what’s going on.”

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris convened the National Security Council on Tuesday afternoon and used U.S. assets in the Middle East to help Israel shoot down Iran’s missiles.
