PGA Championship: Police arrest world number one Scottie Scheffler over an incident unrelated to the fatal accident that delayed the second round

The world’s top golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by police for an unrelated incident that caused a delay in the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, ESPN reported.

According to the ESPN report, Scheffler was held in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to him attempting to drive past a police officer into the entrance to Valhalla before the second round.

Scheffler, who won the US Masters last month, was trying to get to the track to prepare for his round when he was arrested.

The start of the second round had already been delayed after, according to the tournament management, there was a “serious accident near the track”.

ESPN quoted a Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman as saying a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, said on television: “Traffic was backed up and Scottie Scheffler attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club through a median strip, at which point a police officer ordered him to stop.”

“Scheffler attempted to continue driving, the officer then clung to the side of Scheffler’s car.

“Scheffler stopped the vehicle as he turned into the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club, approximately 10 to 20 yards (nine to 18 meters) from where the officer first told him to stop.

“At this point, the officer instructed Scheffler to get out of the car.

“He rolled down the window and the police officer grabbed his arm and started pulling. He reached in, opened the car door, pulled Scheffler out, pushed him against the car and immediately handcuffed him.”

LMPD previously released a statement regarding the traffic accident.

“Our preliminary investigation revealed that an adult male pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Road from south to north when he was struck by a shuttle bus traveling in the mandatory center lane for eastbound buses.

“As a result, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The LMPD traffic unit is investigating.”

Scheffler, who is five shots behind overnight leader Xander Schauffele, was scheduled to tee off on his second round at 8:48 a.m. local time (1248 GMT).
