IACS restricts admission of animals after sudden death of a dog to emergency cases

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Animal Care Services has announced that they will temporarily only take in animals in emergency situations.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services, also known as IACS, has limited animal intake to emergency use only.

According to IACS, one dog died suddenly and unexpectedly less than 24 hours after showing the first signs of illness, causing the shelter to limit dog intake to emergency cases only.

IACS officials have sent samples from the dog for testing, but results are not yet in. While waiting for test results, staff will be caring for the current shelter population and providing treatment if necessary.

“Under the guidance of shelter medical experts, shelter management is putting together protocols and planning how to implement them based on test results,” IACS said. “In the meantime, the shelter will continue to accept animals that are injured or pose a risk to public safety.”

Animals can still be adopted during this time. The animal shelter currently has 162 dogs and 43 cats available for adoption.

The shelter at 2600 S. Harding St. is open for adoptions daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
