How the former Sundowns striker was killed on Sunday

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alton Meiring has died. His former club confirmed the news in an official statement.

ALTON MEIRING DIED

As originally reported by iDiski TimesMeiring died on Sunday in Cape Town at the age of 48. Meiring holds the Premiership Soccer League record of scoring goals for nine different clubs.

“Former Bafana Bafana striker Alton Meiring has unfortunately passed away. The 48-year-old, who won two caps for Bafana, played for several clubs including Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Jomo Cosmos, Golden Arrows and Manning Rangers. We at iDiski Times would like to extend our condolences to Meiring’s family and friends,” the report continued.

Meiring scored for AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows, Cape Town Spurs, Manning Rangers, Sundowns, Jomo Cosmos, Mother City and Platinum Stars – as confirmed by Opta Jabu.

Stabbed

Speaking to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, Meiring’s brother Alton confirmed that the former Sundowns striker was stabbed by a tenant in one of his rental properties.

“Alton rented rooms and some people who lived there were supported by Alton. On the way to church he stopped to drop something off.

“One of the tenants opened the door and stabbed him until he died.

“The shocking thing here is that we know the person who killed him. He turned himself in to the police and is now in custody. This is one of the people Alton helped a lot. He even lived there for free,” Shane concluded.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STATEMENT

Meanwhile, the club known as Kabo Yellow has expressed its condolences to the Meiring family.

“The chairman and Motsepe family, board, technical team, players, management, staff, supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC and the entire Yellow Nation extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we move forward Mourning the loss of former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alton Meiring.

“Some of the top teams the Bafana Bafana international played for are AmaZulu, Jomo Cosmos, Hellenic, Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows. We pray that the Almighty gives comfort and strength to the Meiring family, his friends and former teammates.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and family. Rest in peace, Alton.” The sunsets have ended.
