Who is Jane Wickline, the “Saturday Night Live” newcomer from Philadelphia?

Internet personality and comedian Jane Wickline, best known for her TikTok sketches, will soon be making the jump from phone screens to television screens.

Wickline, who has lived and worked in Philadelphia as a staff writer since 2021, has been cast in the upcoming 50th season of Saturday night liveShe currently lives in Brooklyn.

She is one of three new cast members, joining fellow newbies Ashley Padilla and Emil Wakim.

Wickline built her reputation on TikTok, where she amassed nearly a million followers and 45 million likes on her short-form, humorous videos dating back to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was part of the cast of TikTok’s live sketch comedy show, Staplesview, which has been called the TikTok version of Saturday night live.

She is also part of the variety comedy duo Dukes, with Liva Pierce. Dukes recently completed a mini-tour with stops in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, where they performed at Johnny Brenda’s.

An NBC blog post about Wickline’s addition to the cast also notes that she “plays a terrific trumpet.”

Vanity Fair called Wickline “a staple of Brooklyn’s alternative comedy scene” and noted that the comedian’s addition to SNLThe slate will contribute to the show’s recent infusion of Gen Z talent.

With addition comes subtraction. Saturday night live Cast members include Chloe Troast, Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney.

The next season of SNL is already highly anticipated, thanks to confirmation that Maya Rudolph will return to reprise her role as Kamala Harris.

Representatives for Wickline could not be reached for comment.

The last Philly-connected comedian to join the traditional comedy show was Shane Gillis, who was hired alongside Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman in 2019. His tenure was short-lived — video clips of Gillis using a racial slur toward Chinese people and mocking Asian accents, and a separate video in which he hurled homophobic slurs, resulted in his invitation to join the cast being rescinded.

Gillis claimed that his remarks were taken out of context and that he would apologize to anyone who was offended by his remarks. He nevertheless went on to have a successful comedy career, with several comedy specials, a recurring role on Pete Davidson Nonsense, and a Netflix show of his own. In February, Gillis hosted an episode of Saturday night liveabout four years after being fired from the show. He was recently in the Eagles’ season promo video.

Saturday night liveSeason 50 of the series will premiere live and simultaneously on September 28 on NBC and Peacock. It will be available to stream the following day on Peacock.
