Three-star TE Wyatt Herbel commits to Houston

Houston continues its recruiting momentum.

The Cougars keep another one close to home as three-star Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair tight end Wyatt Herbel committed to Houston Monday afternoon.

Herbel made the decision after an official weekend visit to Houston.

“I got to experience more of the Houston culture this weekend. I feel like one of the biggest reasons that made me think I should definitely go here is the new coaching staff. I know the coach. (Willie) Fritz has been traveling a little bit and he’s been to different programs and he’s grown them from the ground up and I feel like he’s going to do something big in Houston. I’m just trying to be a part of it.”

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder saw his recruiting flourish this spring, garnering double-digit offers. Houston proposed on May 1 and was able to create a connection almost instantly.

“I love the coach (Kevin) Barbaycoach (Henri) Pierre, all. They are great guys. and also another important element that pushed me to get involved is the fact of being close to home. I wanted to stay close to home and I think Houston was the perfect fit because it’s right down the street.”

Barbay and the rest of the offensive staff have a vision for Herbel and his use within the Houston offense.

“I’m more of a receiving tight end type of guy. They see me more as a guy that moves around and puts me in the wing, puts me in the slot and puts me in the gap. They’ll run me routes , but I can still get my hands in the dirt, I can shoot, I can do all that stuff. So coach Barbay was saying they’d use a lot of 12 people and he’d use me a lot for that.”
