Tempe officer injured, suspect killed in shootout

PHOENIX – A Tempe officer was injured and a suspect was killed in a shootout Tuesday night, authorities said.

According to Tempe police, the shooting occurred after officers attempted to stop a suspect near College Avenue and Curry Road around 9 p.m.

The suspect allegedly opened fire during the stop, which was in connection with a case of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

One officer was hit by the shots. Officers fired back, striking the suspect, whose name was not released.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, which is west of Scottsdale Road and north of Tempe Town Lake.

What injuries did the Tempe officer suffer?

The injured Tempe officer was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the arm and later released.

“Every time an officer is injured while serving and protecting our city, it impacts our entire department and the community we serve,” Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy said in a news release. “We are grateful his injuries were not more serious.”

Mesa Police are leading the investigation into the incident through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
