Angry idiot jailed after mocking ex-partner for repeatedly choking her

After a night of drinking vodka, Daniel Stokes was banging on the door shouting “let me in, you fat bitch” and “I’m going to strap you in” in the early hours of the morning.

He then threw the contents of her trash can across the garden. The 32-year-old from Walsall then fainted in her garden, and when she was woken up at 7am by her ex-partner of seven years, who was cleaning up the rubbish he was lying among, he unleashed a brutal attack that left her fearing for her life.

He choked her with such force that she came close to losing consciousness, causing the blood vessels in her face to burst, then threw her against the radiator, giving her the chance to call the police. He then locked her in a lock and strangled her again, releasing her only after she bit her captor.

Throughout, Stokes, of Abbots Close, Walsall, mocked his victim, telling her to “prepare to take your last breath” and he would “hit her even harder when the police arrive”.

After choking her twice, Stokes punched her twice in the head, slapped her and then kicked her to the ground before she ran out of the house and found safety with neighbors.

Stokes left the address before police arrived. However, he presented himself as a wanted man and in a conversation with investigators blamed the victim for the incident.

Held in custody. for the first time, at the first court hearing, he pleaded not guilty to strangulation and assault causing actual bodily harm. However, Stokes changed his plea to guilty before his trial began at Wolverhampton Crown Court. His criminal record includes 23 convictions for 19 offences, many of them for assault, and at least two convictions against the same victim, with whom he has five children.

In mitigation, the court heard how Stokes “realized this was a turning point in his life” by admitting the damage he had caused. He also struggled with mental health problems and addiction to class A drugs.

Recorder Simon Hughes sentenced Stokes to 24 months in prison. This was a terrifying attack on your victim. She suffered cuts and bruises to her nose, a swollen throat, broken blood vessels and injuries to her neck, back and legs.

“It was an attack of extreme violence. There were many cases of suffocation and there were several situations where you could have prevented it, but you continued.

“I cannot ignore that you clearly took pleasure in the assault and the control you had over your victim, which is why I have increased your sentence.”
