Tragedy in Ebonyi: attackers kill a man, set his body on fire, police respond

Amaka Ngbo, Ebony conditionThe Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the horrific murder of 48-year-old Michael Nnaji, a native of Amuri in Nkanu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, October 29, in the Amaka Ngbo community where Nnaji lived.

Reacting to the development, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu stated:

“Yes, my brother. The Oaukwu Divisional Police Officer called me and informed me of this; and immediately our men went to the scene.”

He added that police have launched an investigation, although no arrests have been made yet.

Horrifying details of the attack

According to eyewitnesses, Nnaji was attacked at around 9:45 p.m. by two masked gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle, reports The Punch.

A family source, speaking anonymously, said: “We were in the store when two young men wearing masks entered the premises.

“One entered through the front door, the other through the back door. They went into the living room where Mike was resting and shot him twice.”

A witness who miraculously escaped the attackers described the chaos that followed:

“As soon as I heard the shot, I ran out, but one of them grabbed me, took my phone and dragged me home.

“I managed to free myself and ran to a nearby complex. Most of the residents fled the scene, leaving Mike with the bandits.”

After shooting Nnaji, the attackers set fire to his body in his house before fleeing the scene, The Vanguard.

A family source lamented the lack of help during the attack, stating:

“Out of fear, no one came to help, and his body was severely burned. Many household items were also completely destroyed.”

Nnaji, known for his jovial nature and commitment to local security, had lived in the community for many years.

A family member expressed disbelief at this brutal act, saying:

“He was a calm and cheerful man. I don’t understand why anyone would do something like that to him.”

DSP Ukandu assured the community that the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the crime, promising to arrest and punish those responsible.

“We are committed to restoring peace and security to the community,” he said.
