Kabul: Two children were killed and another injured in an explosion of unexploded ordnance left over from previous wars in Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan, provincial police spokesman Khalid Sarhadi said on Thursday.

According to an official, the gruesome incident occurred in Navar district on Wednesday afternoon when a group of children found an object resembling a toy and started playing with it, but the object exploded, killing two children on the spot and injuring another.

Xinhua news agency reported that three children were killed and three others injured in a similar accident last week in the neighboring Qara Bagh district of Nawar.

Afghanistan is one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world. Every month, dozens of people, mostly children, are killed or maimed by explosive devices left over from more than forty years of war and social unrest.
