Susie Hedalen, candidate for superintendent of public instruction, shares her vision

Susie Hedalen, Republican candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction, visited NBC Montana today Thursday to discuss her reasons for running for the position.

Hedalen said she has been a teacher, principal, superintendent and served on the Board of Public Education.

“I am excited to bring this experience from rural Montana to our AA districts and bring that voice to the table,” Hedalen said. “I think it’s important to put a superintendent in the superintendent’s shoes.”

Hedalen said she wants to build bridges between industry and schools so that students are prepared for the job market.

“It’s something I’m very passionate about attracting more students into the profession and also giving them a head start in college.”

Hedalen also said she wants to see improved math and reading scores and believes the key to student success is increasing trust in parents.

“I want to make sure we are transparent about what we teach,” Hedalen said.

The school financing formula will soon change for the first time in over a decade.

“We need to allocate more resources to classrooms and teachers and to improving student outcomes.”
