Online fundraiser for the family of a teenager murdered in an officer-involved shooting

The family of a teenager shot by police during a foot chase in Findlay on Monday is taking action GoFundMe website to help with funeral costs.

The Lucas County Coroner’s Office identified the teen as 17-year-old Kalvin Darapheth.

The GoFundMe the page reads as follows:

“As a parent, this is the worst decision you can make. Arranging a funeral for a teenage child who died suddenly due to a misunderstanding during a shooting. We are asking for help with funeral costs. If you are able to help, we would be grateful. Thank you for all your support and love.”

As of Thursday morning, about $3,000 of the $10,000 goal had been raised.

The Findlay Police Department said officers were dispatched to Bernard Park on Monday evening after a report of three minors consuming alcohol.

Officers arrived and located three juveniles in the park.

During the investigation, one of the juveniles fled on foot and officers began a pursuit.

Police say that during the foot pursuit, the juvenile suspect fired a firearm at the pursuing officer.

The pursuing officer returned fire, striking juvenile suspect.

The officers immediately provided first aid.

The juvenile suspect was transported to Blanchard Valley to the hospital and later to a hospital in the Toledo area, where he died.

Police Chief James Mathias issued the order the following statement: :

“This it was a dangerous and tragic situation. Our officers are trained to respond to threats of violence, especially when weapons are involved. There was a gun recovered at the scene. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who as a department was a part of this critical event, as well as the loss of life.

We are aware comments, assumptions and misinformation on social media, and we will post information as it becomes available. We are working closely with the Hancock County Attorney’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to release redacted information regarding footage from the used Axon Body Worn Camera in the near future.”
