Former minister Lohan Ratwatte was arrested on Thursday (31) morning for possessing an unregistered vehicle and later brought to Colombo the same day. Mirihana police received information about an unregistered car parked in a three-story building in Embuldeniya, Mirihana.

After inspecting the vehicle on October 26, police determined that Ratwatte’s wife was the owner of the building. According to police sources, the vehicle was not registered and did not have any documents indicating when and how it was imported.

Ratwatte’s wife said the vehicle was brought to their Mirihana residence by the minister’s former secretary, who committed suicide on October 5. She added that he had been driving there three weeks before his death. The secretary reportedly took his own life at a building owned by Ratwatte in Mahaiyawa. Kandy police are conducting a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suicide.

Initially, Ratwatte was ordered to report to the police station to give a statement, but instead he went into hiding. Mirihana police later received information that Ratwatte was hiding at his residence in Mahaiyawa, where he was subsequently arrested on Thursday morning.
