• The accident occurred during an event at a race track in Costa Rica.
  • The 911 GT3 driver botched the start and suffered massive wheel spin.
  • Fortunately, the Mustang driving next to the Porsche did not die in the accident.

In a drag race between A Porsche 911 GT3 and Ford Mustang, the result should be obvious. The Porsche, thanks in part to its strong launch control, should outgrow the Ford. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mustang will most likely ram it into a wall or into a crowd of people. However, this did not happen when a GT3 and Mustang recently raced each other in Costa Rica.

This wasn’t a polished drag strip, but the straightaway of a local track, seemingly part of a larger event that attracted all kinds of cars and bikes for random duels on the track. Unfortunately for the Porsche driver, it appears he skipped the “how to start the car” part of the owner’s manual.

To watch: A Mustang and an SUV collide on the highway and all hell breaks loose

How white 911 lines up next to a bright red Mustang as the unmistakable soundtrack of the high-revving, naturally aspirated 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine fills the stands. A moment later he pulls away. Oddly enough, the sound of the car bouncing off the rev limiter gives the impression that the launch control was on but the car left the line at a snail’s pace, perhaps because the system wasn’t engaged or the driver didn’t know what they were doing.

Either way, the car spins its rear wheels and soon begins to slide. It appears that the driver overcorrected and hit a concrete barrier on the side of the track. The force of the impact not only shocks the event participants, but also destroys the front of the Porsche, leaving it with extensive damage that will be very expensive to repair.

Fortunately for all involved, the Porsche did not veer to the right Mustangnor did it hit the photographer kneeling precariously on the nearby grass.
